Pinturas para leer
In 2006 I received the Oaxaca State Grant for Young Artists to create this series of large format paintings.
My original plan was to create a series of paintings to get the attention of the viewer through single words that compliment the paintings' visual aspect. Words play an important role in the composition of the painting too; it is not just the meaning that interests me but also how a word could be seen as an element of the work.
I called the series Paintings to Read. I feel that people are so obsessed with technology and their electronic devices that it is hard to capture their attention. I would like people to be just as obsessed with art!
That year was a very complicated time of social upheaval and protest in Oaxaca, and across the world. My home, work and studio space was located in the middle of the constant protests and military checkpoints in Oaxaca. The sense of looming war and terror is reflected in this series.
This series was also presented for my BFA Degree Thesis at the University of Veracruz, Xalapa.
